Although nursing is a popular hospital job, there are not enough registered nurses to match the demand for them — and the shortage is continuing to grow. The Bureau of Health Professionals estimates that future shortages of qualified nursing professionals will reach 29 percent, or 800,000 nurses, by 2020.
While facts and figures like this are not ideal for hospitals, it means that the job outlook for nurses is better than ever. Careers in nursing afford the opportunity to work in virtually any location with great benefits, flexible schedules, and job security. As one of the world’s oldest professions, nurses are one of the foundational pieces of the healthcare system, and they will always be needed.

McLeod Health, located in Florence, South Carolina, is looking for experienced registered nurses in order to expand its services to the community. The University of Mississippi Medical Center, located in Jackson, Mississippi, is the state’s only academic medical center. Centra Health, a regional nonprofit healthcare system based in Lynchburg, Virginia, is looking to add more registered nurses to its team of 6,400. There are many positions open in various departments across its four hospitals, and the system is offering $10,000 sign-on bonuses for nurses with two years of experience and over, and $5,000 sign-on bonuses for new nursing graduates or nurses with less than two years of experience.
Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare, located in Memphis, Tennessee, is the third largest hospital system in the Mid-South. It is one of the largest hospital systems in the country and has been named as one of the 2009 Top 100 Integrated Healthcare Networks by SDI, the nation’s premier rating system.
