The Office of Community Outreach & Engagement (OCOE) is an integral component of the Cancer Consortium. It is housed at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle with field offices in Sunnyside and Spokane. The mission of the OCOE is to reduce cancer health inequities throughout the cancer care and research continuum by promoting relevant collaborative research and programs. The OCOE uses a qualitative and quantitative data-driven approach to identify our region’s greatest needs and strategic research aims to address those needs, which are prioritized and implemented in partnership with our regional Community Action Boards and our Internal Advisory Council of leaders and faculty from throughout the Cancer Consortium.
The OCOE is seeking a Community Health Education Manager who shares our mission to achieve cancer health equity by using bidirectional, anti-racist, equitable community-engaged approaches in programming and research. The position opening comes at an exciting time for the Cancer Consortium, as it broadens its reach throughout Washington. The Community Health Education Manager is part of the OCOE leadership team and collaborates closely with faculty and staff to achieve the OCOE’s scientific and programmatic objectives.
The OCOE’s Community Health Education Manager leads and supervises a team of community health educators as they conduct outreach, education and research with communities that are disproportionately represented in cancer incidence and mortality, including American Indians/Alaskan Natives, African-Americans/Blacks, Asian Americans, Hispanics/Latino/a/x, those living in rural areas, those with low socio-economic status, uninsured/underinsured, and other disenfranchised individuals.

The Community Health Education Manager reports to the Assistant Director of the OCOE. The Community Health Education Manager will work independently in performing daily responsibilities of supervising, coordinating, and overseeing a team of community health educators (CHE). Special skills and knowledge are applied in directing the CHEs to cover the catchment area of Washington state and ensure that the community voice is heard and brought to the OCOE on a regular and continuing basis. The Community Health Education Manager will facilitate partnerships among Cancer Consortium researchers, OCOE staff, and external organizations on collaborative projects related to health equity in Washington. The Community Health Education Manager will be responsible for writing documents/reports to the community as well as faculty and staff within the Cancer Consortium.
Operational Oversight (20%)
Practice and demonstrate cultural sensitivity with diverse populations OCOE works with.
Practice community-based participatory research principles in community engagement and interactions.
Work with OCOE team to collaborate with other Cancer Consortium programs (Fred Hutch Cancer Center, University of Washington and Seattle Children’s) on community outreach and engagement.
Implement policies and procedures according to protocol, IRB, grant/contract and Center specifications.
Participate in strategic planning process for OCOE.
Oversee the development of public health interventions consistent with the OCOE strategic plan and annual action plans produced by the OCOE Team in partnership with the Community Action Coalition and Community Action Board.
Staff Management (40%)
Oversee six community health educators (4 based in Seattle, WA; 2 based in Spokane, WA)
Collaborate with community health education team based in Sunnyside, WA.
Assist staff in coordinating activities with research and community partners.
Plan and facilitate weekly staff meetings.
Coordinate community health education team training and professional development.
Travel for events and meetings with partner organizations.
Knowledge Management & Communications (40%)
Oversee partnership assessment and program evaluation.
Develop materials and products based on principles and methods of health education and promotion.
Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills with established strong writing of health communications, media materials, and presentations.
Develop curriculum and training materials with OCOE team and community members.

Master’s degree in related field with at least 2 years of post-master’s relevant experience in public health or Bachelor’s degree with at least 5 years of post-bachelor’s relevant experience and training in public health.
Valid Washington State Driver's License.
