Under the supervision of a RN and general direction of an anesthesiologist is responsible to provide anesthesia support services throughout the medical center in conjunction with surgical and non-surgical procedures requiring anesthesia.
Assists with airway management techniques including mask, endotracheal, emergent and or difficult fiber-optic intubations, and awake intubation, under the direct supervision of the anesthesiologist. Sets-up and uses all associated equipment which includes but is not limited to laryngoscope, C-Mac, fiber optic intubating scopes, tube changers, jet ventilators, airway atomizers, and all single and double lumen endotracheal tubes.
Makes available, assembles, and assists with operation of specialized equipment such as humidification units, fiber-optic endoscopic equipment, rapid infusion devices/blood warmers, patient warming devices, neuromuscular devices, infusion pumps and syringes and TEE set-up.
Inventories, orders and maintains departmental supply stock consistent with departmental demand. Obtains or stocks supplies accordingly. Maintains anesthesia supplies in all anesthetizing locations (general OR, as well as remote locations, including GI lab, cath lab, radiology (CT, MRI, Xray, interventional), including pediatric and difficult airway carts. Maintains sterile supplies within expiration date.
Reviews the surgery schedule of the day in conjunction with the Lead Anesthesia Technician. Plans and anticipates the timing and type of assistance required to support the anesthesiologists and promote efficient and safe patient flow in all area where anesthesia service is provided
Cleans, sterilizes and disinfects routine anesthesia equipment.
Maintains daily stock for the Omnicell anesthesia work stations, anesthesia machines and anesthesia supply cabinets. Checks and calibrates the anesthesia machine.
Assists the surgical team with patient transport and positioning pre and post procedure.
Follows the guidelines of the Joint Commission for environment of care, universal protocol, and infection prevention.
Adheres to infection prevention guidelines and Standard Precautions. Uses good hand washing technique adheres to isolation policy helps keep Operating Room clean disposes of infectious waste properly appropriately clean any reusable items adhering to all manufacturers guidelines.
Demonstrates competency in interpersonal relationships and populations served as this applies to job functions and clinical areas assigned.
Assists and anticipates the needs of the anesthesiologist for invasive monitor insertion and prepares regional and neuraxial block supplies utilizing aseptic technique. These procedures include but are not limited to insertion of pulmonary artery catheter, central venous catheter, arterial catheter, regional anesthesia blocks (single shot and continuous technique) and neuraxial blocks.
Prepares and maintains anesthesia workspace, monitoring devices and anesthesia delivery systems pre, intra and post anesthesia with consideration and knowledge of age specific issues related to meeting the needs of the various patient groups.
Utilizes critical thinking to assist and anticipate the needs of the anesthesiologist for invasive monitor insertion and procedures utilizing aseptic technique such as insertion of pulmonary artery catheter, central venous catheter and regional anesthesia blocks.
Promotes effective working relationships with the anesthesia department staff and works collaboratively with RN circulators, Surgical Technicians, Nursing Assistants and Environmental Services.
