Job Description


The primary purpose of the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) position is to be responsible for directing, planning and coordinating the functions and activities of nursing services and assigned patient care service areas, assuring consistency with University Hospital’s overall strategic plan. Provides leadership in personnel management, financial management, and the development of structures and processes to ensure quality patient care for all areas/departments reporting to this position. Develops productive relationships with medical staff, professional and support staff, managers and senior leadership of the hospital that are conducive to creating and implementing well designed clinical and non/clinical programs. The CNO directs the development and implementation of policies and procedures for the nursing service and assigned patient care service areas which are in compliance with UH policies and procedures and all legal, regulatory and accreditation standards and requirements.



Professional Registered Nurse licensed in the State of New Jersey required. Bachelor’s Degree required, preferably in Nursing. Master’s Degree in Nursing, Public Health, Administration or a related field required. Doctoral Degree preferred. Five (5) years of clinical nursing experience in an acute care hospital required, plus an additional seven (7) years of progressively more responsible nursing supervisory/management experience required. Senior management experience in a university affiliated tertiary facility preferred. Must have a sound clinical knowledge of nursing and a demonstrated commitment to excellence in nursing practice, as well as an ability to work effectively with various health care professionals. Excellent communication and team building skills required. Must have extensive knowledge of Regulatory Agency Standards. Proven ability to design and operationalize care delivery systems required. Must be able to analyze and resolve complex problems related to nursing service management. Knowledge of how to accomplish superior performance in a unionized environment is preferred.

A candidate who does not possess the Master’s Degree may substitute additional years of senior management experience for consideration.
