Job Description


Under the direction of the Research Director of the Clinical Research Unit (CRU) and Translational Team for the Department of Medicine, Hematology Oncology Division in consultation with the Site Investigator(s), Team leader and Division MSO. In collaborative practice with attending physicians, Drs. Chai-Ho and Oliai, the physician assistance (PA) will be responsible for providing independent clinical care, and improving care for the patients with hematologic malignancy and head and neck cancer. This position requires degree of Physician Assistant. Experience in the area of specialization is preferred, but not a mandate. The PA must be self-directed, and have a strong sense of responsibility. The PA will develop and implement treatment care plan with limited direct supervision, communicate and provide education to patients. serve as a clinical care extender of attending physician. In addition, the PA will see research patients, receive training on clinical trial regulatory requirements and function as sub-investigator for trial activities participated by supervising attending physicians. Evaluation will continue on ongoing basis with modification to plan as necessary.

  • Active license to practice as a Physician Assistant in California and must possess certification as Certified Physician Assistant through NCCPA -Required
  • Graduated from an accredited PA Program- Required
  • Master's degree in Physician Assistant Program - Preferred
  • Current BLS from American Heart Association or American Red Cross- Required
  • Previos Hem/Onc experience - Preferred

  • Certified in performing bone marrow biopsy, or willingness to learn and perform specialty related procedures- Required
  • Skill to communicate effectively with persons from widely diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to coordinate /prioritize work schedule
  • Ability and willingness to learn and update specialty care related knowledge
  • Ability to compassionately and efficiently deal with patient questions and concerns.
  • Ability to deal with difficult or challenging situations with equanimity
  • Appreciation of the need to seek guidance for complicated clinical questions
  • Demonstrate a strong sense of responsibility, and able to follow through/finish tasks 
  • Ability to collaborate/communicate with multidisciplinary team, supportive staffs in an efficient and collegial way
  • Ability to operate computers and be familiar with electronic medical record system (EPIC)
  • Knowledge of laboratory, radiation and biohazard safety requirements, willingness and ability to obtain 
  • Experience with cancer patients; able to manage chronically ill patients with attending physician -preferred
    Updated knowledge of current general medicine practices
