Job Description:

The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics department of Ambulatory Surgery Center is seeking a 100% Surgical Technologist. This position is Monday through Friday, no holiday and no weekends. Under the direction of a registered professional nurse assists with surgical procedures; provision of therapeutic, preventative and emergency patient care duties; and preparation, operation and maintenance of routine and complex equipment, instruments and supplies.

Duties to include:

  • Cleans, checks, orders and re-supplies surgical area and support/storage areas

  • Provides proper care and handling of equipment, instruments and supplies (E/I/S).

  • Prepares surgical area for patient care.

  • Provides therapeutic, preventive and emergency patient care in an operating room setting.

  • Drapes the patient and equipment appropriate to surgical procedure.

  • Recognizes and communicates breaks in aseptic technique.

  • Documents and communicates creation of sterile field.

  • Prepares and passes sutures to the surgeon.

  • Positions patient for surgery and to facilitate breathing, initiating corrective action for airway obstruction.

  • Performs sponge, sharps, and instrument counts.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of principles of medical and surgical asepsis.

  • Knowledge of medical instruments and supplies.

  • Knowledge of cleaning, decontaminating and sterilizing procedures.

  • Knowledge and ability to perform CPR and emergency care procedures.

  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality.

  • Ability to maintain a courteous and respectful approach toward patients, visitors, and fellow staff members.

  • Ability to work safely and willingness to comply with special safety and health precautions.

  • Ability to follow protocols for the disposal of linen, waste and contaminated supplies and equipment.

  • Ability to transport and/or escort patients.

  • Ability to follow universal precautions.

  • Ability to provide care and with regard to patient condition and age.

  • Ability to us supplies and equipment in a cost-efficient manner.

  • Ability to maintain personal appearance in accordance with dress code.

  • Ability to alter work schedule to meet unit/patient needs.

  • Ability to be punctual and dependable.

  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships.

    Schedule: Monday through Friday

    Location: Ambulatory Surgery Center at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics

    Rotations: 10 hour shifts scheduled 6:45 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. plus extension of shift call.

Minimum Eligibility Requirements

  • Satisfactory completion of a vocational or military course in surgical technology, or certification as a Surgical Technologist.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Prior perioperative experience

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment

  • Previous ASC experience is desired

  • Demonstrates customer service and service recovery
