Under general direction, works cooperatively with all team members to process and prepare specimens submitted to Pathology.
Performs computer functions relating to the Pathology Department.
Schedules procedures to be performed by a pathologist.
Retrieves requested patient information from previous pathology reports and retrieves patient history as requested by Pathology Assistants.
Accessions all specimens received and verifies that all specimens are properly identified and labeled according to departmental procedure and timeframes.
Distributes specimens to appropriate work area in a timely manner.
Processes cytology and bone marrow specimens according to established procedures.
Performs preventative maintenance on equipment, documents PM appropriately, makes minor repairs and immediately contacts appropriate personnel for problems requiring repairs that are more complex. Follows-up to ensure repairs are completed.
Processes requests for test(s) to be sent to outside reference laboratories.
Prepares specimens for transport to reference laboratories and storage.
Receives, restocks, delivers supplies, and notifies appropriate personnel of potential and/or actual stock shortages while maintaining appropriate inventory to ensure all required work can be performed.
Labels reagents and supplies with appropriate information.
Conducts hourly rounds or as needed to various departments within and outside the hospital for specimen pick-up to the lab.
Fills specimen containers.
Obtains appropriate clinical histories for surgical specimens.
Disposes of samples according to department specimen retention policy.
Disposes chemical and laboratory waste according to established procedures.
Assists with general office duties including faxing, photocopying, mail/shipping, etc
Accepts and screens telephone calls on the main office line and routes calls appropriately.
Receives and processes returning slides and consultation reports.
Discards paper files before packing and sending to warehouse as per retention policy.
Files reports and slides at the warehouse.
Retrieves patient's slides, blocks and reports from the warehouse as needed.
Retrieves reports, slides, and blocks for the pathologists.
Scans reports into PowerChart.
Organizes and prepares case information for Tumor Board Presentation.
Processes requests for send-outs, subpoenas, and affidavits (may include insurance authorizations, charge entry, and/or billing).
Demonstrates an active problem solving attitude & positive approach to all aspects of job
Maintains safe work area by observing all safety procedures and reporting any unsafe conditions or practices to the appropriate personnel.
Participates in hospital performance improvement activities (kaizens, lean initiatives) when appropriate.
Assists with the training of new department staff members in accordance with the departmental training process, including documentation process.
