Position Reports to: Patient Accounts Director
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Utilizes technical coding principles for assigning appropriate ICD 9-CM/PCS; ICD-10-CM/PCS and CPT procedures.
Extracts required information from source documentation and enters into abstracting system.
Consults physicians with all coding questions as needed.
Performs analysis of unbilled listing and correct or complete missing elements.
Works in conjunction with the Patient Accounting Department to streamline billing/coding process for optimal efficiency and effectiveness.
Assists in implementing solutions to reduce back-end billing errors.
Maintains knowledge of coding principles and adheres to official coding guidelines.
Maintains quality assurance standard of 95% accuracy.
Coding must be performed consistently and within the time period established by management.
Productivity standards are defined as follows:
Ancillary allotted time as determined by management
Inpatient 3 charts per hour
ER 12-15 charts per hour
Ambulatory Surgery - 5 charts per hour
Observations 3-4 charts per hour
Takes on special projects as assigned.
Review clinical documentation and diagnostic results as appropriate to extract data and apply appropriate ICD-9-CM and CPT codes for billing, internal and external reporting, research and regulatory compliance.
Effectively presents information and responds to questions from hospital managers, staff members, physicians, physician offices, insurance companies, attorney offices, patients, patient families, and the general public.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Preferred successful completion of approved Coding Certificate Program: CCS, CPC, CPC-H, or degree in Health Information Management: RHIA or RHIT.
