Job Description

Coding/Reimbursement: Reviews information from the medical record and accurately assigns diagnostic and procedural codes using ICD-10 CM and/or CPT-4  coding system Ensures accurate billing and statistical information Provides data for Clinical Efficiency Assigns accurate APC (Ambulatory Payment Classification) to all outpatient visits Ensures appropriate reimbursement for services Validates all outpatient charges Regulatory/Compliance: Abides by NMHS Coding Compliance Policy, ICD-10 CM and CPT Coding Guidelines, and Standards of Ethical Coding Complies with HIPAA (Health Information Portability and Accountability Act) Verifies proper authorization prior to release medical information Processes request for release of medical information Reporting/Recordkeeping: Reviews non-covered, modifier and claim disposition reports Adjust/Correct incorrect data and inform Business Office of adjustments/corrections Maintains records of released medical information in compliance with Departmental, Regulatory, and Legal Policies/Procedures/Guidelines/criteria Reviews outpatient medical records to ensure compliance with JCAHO Standards Ensures quality documentation of medical records Clerical:                  Files various reports, records, documents and other correspondence in a manner that is easily retrievable  Education: Attends, demonstrates and participates in required in-services, quarterly meetings, performance improvement activities, and other educational programs Customer Service: Assist ancillary departments with determining accurate CPT Codes Assists Business Services and patients with inquiries regarding the coding of bills Requirements: High School Diploma required; Associates Degree in Health Information;  preferred Certified as a Coding Specialist required (must be obtained within 1 year of starting position) Minimum of 1 year of coding experience with ICD-10 and CPT-4 schemes; preferred Knowledge of Ambulatory Payment Classification (APC) reimbursement system; required Knowledge of medical terminology; required Successful completion of a basic anatomy course; required Ability to operate a computer and software programs; required Good verbal and written communication skills; required Must have ability to work with co-workers, management, and physicians; required


Highest Education Level Required: High School Diploma or GED Highest Education Level Preferred: Associates Optional Degrees And Majors: Associates in Health Information Management (Preferred)
