Job Description

Responsible for coding, abstracting, and analysis of information from patient medical records for purposes of accurate patient billing; for disease, operation, and physician indices; and for the maintenance of a statistical patient database. This includes effective use of hospital encoding systems and resources. Education and/or Experience High School diploma or GED equivalent required CCS or RHIT certification preferred Two years' experience assigning ICD-10 CM/PCS and CPT codes in an acute care facility. Major Responsibilities Performs ICD-10 CM/PCS and CPT coding of diagnoses and surgical procedures, both concurrently and retrospectively for all hospital case types including inpatient, outpatient, observation, clinic and emergency services Assigns billing codes for both professional and facility fees Communicates with providers when needed to obtain complete and specific documentation in order to accurately assign codes Follows compliant physician query processes Performs health information studies for purposes of quality assurance, peer review, and data reporting Reviews, analyzes, and files records, utilizing computer skills according to departmental policies Liaisons with Billing and ancillary departments to ensure complete records Assists in formulating procedures and systems for the department Participates in ongoing Hospital quality assessment and risk management procedures by performing concurrent and retrospective screening and identification of cases, which require further review Performs performance improvement data gathering tasks as required, utilizing established criteria, and matrix systems Compiles reports, audits, statistics and special studies Drafts and submits appropriate appeals to Medicare or insurance carrier or review organizations Performs record assembly and analysis, release of information, chart retrieval, record filing and other basic record duties necessary for day-to-day departmental functioning Schedule 1.0 FTE; 40 hours/week; Day Shift
