Job Description

Under general supervision prepares tissue specimens for routine and special procedures for interpretation by the Pathologists. Core Competencies Performs routine and complex histochemical and/or immunohistochemistry procedures according to established policies and procedures. Assists in training and orienting new employees. Assists in establishing new work flow processes and procedures Assists in problem troubleshooting. Recognizes basic problems in test methodology, quality control and instrument functions. Performs validation of new antibodies and tests. Stores documents and slides for future reference appropriately. Provides input for employee performance evaluation. Participates in daily Histology functions including but not limited to: embedding tissue sample, cutting paraffin and frozen sections, staining and coversliping tissue section. Performs preventative maintenance on equipment, documents PM appropriately, makes minor repairs and immediately contacts appropriate personnel for problems requiring repairs that are more complex. Follows-up to ensure repairs are completed. Performs validation of new antibodies and tests. Stores documents and slides for future reference appropriately. Distributes specimens to appropriate work area in a timely manner. Disposes chemical and laboratory waste according to established procedures. Receives, restocks, delivers supplies, and notifies appropriate personnel of potential and/or actual stock shortages while maintaining appropriate inventory to ensure all required work can be performed. Labels reagents and supplies with appropriate information. Maintains inventory of supplies. Demonstrates an active problem solving attitude & positive approach to all aspects of job Maintains safe work area by observing all safety procedures and reporting any unsafe conditions or practices to the appropriate personnel. Participates in hospital performance improvement activities (kaizens, lean initiatives) when appropriate.
