  • Position Summary
    • The psychiatric mental health nurse in the out-patient setting works with individuals, families, groups and communities,  assessing mental health needs, developing a comprehensive plan of care, assisting in the implementation of the treatment  plan, and finally, evaluating the response to the care. This position frequently serves as the team coordinator, assisting  with triage, case management, psychoeducation, and crisis intervention.  In addition, the psychiatric mental health RN  works closely with the team's attending psychiatrists to review compliance and meet regulatory expectations for team patients. The psychiatric mental health nurse in the out-patient setting supports the MMC Nursing mission, vision, and values.  The psychiatric mental health nurse adheres to the scope of practice as defined by the Maine State Board of  Nursing, and further follows the guidelines defined in the MMC Nursing Standards of Care and Policies and Procedures. Additionally, the psychiatric mental health nurse abides by the standards of care as defined by the specialty's professional  organization, the American Psychiatric Nurse's Association. The psychiatric mental health nurse in the out-patient setting  reports directly to the designated program manager. Nursing supervision and support is provided by the Out-patient Psychiatric Nurse Coordinator.
  • Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
    • Education: A Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing is preferred.
    • License/Certifications: Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Maine is required. Certification at the basic level through the American Nurses Credentialing Center as an RNC is strongly preferred.
    • Experience: Two years or more of work experience in a mental health setting, preferably with at least one year in acute or inpatient setting.
    • Demonstrated competency in applying evidence based knowledge, theory, practices, principles, and processes of professional nursing.
    • Advanced interpersonal and communication skills required to interact effectively with patients, families, health team members, and other community providers.
    • Ability to prioritize, multi-task, and attend to high level of detail in coordinating multiple needs for delivery of team based care. Understands need to support the efforts of the team clinicians who are able to provide billable services.
    • Knowledge of community resources and agencies, and ability to plan for appropriate systems to resolve unmet needs.
    • Ability to identify potential crisis situations involving patients and/or families and to imitate appropriate action.
    • Knowledge of standards, policies, procedures, and organizational structure of the unit, the Department of Behavioral Health, the Department of Nursing, and Maine Medical Center.
