Summary

  • Position Summary
    • The Medical Communications Technician serves as the pivotal link between the Hospital and Emergency Medical Service, Fire and Police. Responsible for triaging patients coming to the hospital, assigning initial acuity levels and recognizing acutely ill patients requiring critical care and/or specialty care and then coordinating that care. Facilitates direct admit transfers and acute patients arriving by ground or helicopter. Supports EMS Services with supplies, maintaining equipment and coordinating with the Pharmacy for prehospital drug exchanges. This position also supports hospitals within the Southern Maine region with diversion announcements and coordinating responses to mass casualty or other disaster incidents.

      The Medical Communications Technician also serves a pivotal role within the hospital. Responsible for triaging and dispatching teams that respond to emergencies within the Hospital. Receives reports and document patients coming from other healthcare facilities to the Emergency Department. Facilitates specialty services for acute patients in the Emergency Department. First contact for outside mass casualty and disasters incidents and responsible for coordinating the initial phase of the Hospitals disaster plan. May be deployed to a Field Incident Command post to serve as the hospital liaison for incident communications.

      The Medical Communications Technicians position is highly dependent on multiple communications methods including Radios, Phones, Paging Systems and requires extensive documentation both written and within a variety of different computer programs.

  • Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
    • Education: N/A
    • License/Certifications: Basic Emergency Medical Technician License Required. Paramedic License strongly preferred. Basic certification in NIMS / ICS required
    • Experience: N/A
    • Moderate Understanding of Medical Terminology, Anatomy and Emergency Medical Care
    • Moderate Understanding of Radio And Phone Use
    • Exceptional Computer Skills to include Microsoft Office
