GENERAL DESCRIPTION

• The Medical Lab Technician (MLT) is responsible for the analysis of laboratory specimens and subsequent result reporting according to laboratory protocol and procedures. 
• The Medical Lab Scientist (MLS) coordinates and participates in a variety of complex technical tasks in the performance of laboratory tests to obtain data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.

• EDUCATION & TRAINING REQUIREMENTS  
  • MLT requires:
  • Associate's degree in a relevant science preferred.
  • MLT (ASCP) or equivalent registration or has completed a technician training program in a school accredited/approved by HHS, or MLT eligible under Medicare laboratory regulations.
  • Basic Life Support certification.
  • MLS requires:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology.
  • Iowa Med Tech licensure (ASCP), either by examination or by reciprocity.
  • Basic Life Support certification.
• WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
  • MLT requires:
  • Four months' clinical laboratory internship preferred.
  • Demonstrated clinical competence in relevant area of laboratory practice.
  • Must have the ability to demonstrate self-confidence and positive attitude toward self and others. Maintains commitment and enthusiasm to goal achievement.
  • MLS requires:
  • Demonstrated competence in the area of laboratory procedures.
  • Significant skill and knowledge in IS applications/automated technology is desired.
