Job Description

Carilion Clinic’s Legal Services Department provides comprehensive legal advice and support concerning all aspects of its health care enterprise.  Employing over 13,000 individuals, Carilion seeks a health care attorney with experience with the legal aspects of employment matters.  It is envisioned that this Associate General Counsel will spend approximately fifty (50) percent of his or her time on employment related matters and the remainder on contractual matters common to a health system.  Specific responsibilities include: Drafting, revising and reviewing contracts, agreements, policies, procedures, written materials and handbooks involving employment, terms and conditions of employment, employment separation, independent contractors, human resources vendors, staffing agencies, and leased employees; Responding to and advising on government agency audits and investigations (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, Department of Labor, Office of Federal Contract Compliance, Virginia Attorney General, Virginia Human Rights Commission); Providing employment advice on matters such as wage and hour, attendance, leave, discipline and investigations; Drafting, revising and reviewing a broad spectrum of non-employment contracts to include areas such as purchasing (supply chain and materials management), IT and real estate; Reviewing and analyzing arrangements between hospitals and other parties on compliance for Stark, Anti-Kickback Statute, and other fraud and abuse laws, EMTALA, HIPAA, antitrust laws, and any other regulatory requirements applicable to such arrangements; Developing new areas of sub-specialty as needs may arise; Working effectively with management and other members of the Department (7 attorneys, 1 paralegal and 1 administrative/executive assistant) as well as in conjunction with outside counsel, with limited supervision.  Be at your best with an organization that equips you to do so.  Whose people unite in making lives better. Explore how joining a regional leader can enhance your ability to learn, grow, and succeed. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education: Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from an accredited law school required. Experience: Minimum of four (4) years of experience as outside counsel within an employment or health care law department.  Similar in-house experience with a hospital or health system may be considered.      Licensure/certification: Eligible to practice as an attorney within the Commonwealth of Virginia via a Virginia license or in-house counsel designation. Other Minimum Qualifications: Must be a self-starter with an attention to detail who meets deadlines with changing priorities and who has excellent judgment and decision-making skills.
