OCOM Hospital Location: 8100 S. Walker, Building C., Oklahoma City, OK 73139 Employment Status: Full time, Monday-Friday (no call, no weekends), benefit eligible Shift: Early morning, 5:00am start Overall Responsibility:  To establish guidelines to identify the professional qualifications and skill required for employment in the pre-operative area and Phase II recovery Unit. It is the Pre-Op Nurse’s responsibility to formulate and execute the nursing care for patients of all ages in the Pre-Op area and the Phase II recovery area to ensure the patients receives the highest quality of care, that their safety is ensured according to policy and procedure, and to instigate and execute all other tasks as requested by the Chief Nursing Officer.   Key tasks and responsibilities (essential functions) Prepares pre-operatively for patient admission according to Hospital policies and procedures. Demonstrates knowledge of drug usage, their actions and side effects, interaction with anesthesia agents and expected patient outcomes. Recognizes emergency situation, responds quickly and efficiently following policy and procedure, ACLS, PALS, physician orders or emergency plan to prevent adverse patient outcomes. Maintains knowledge and adheres to policies/procedure, care standards for Pre-operative care. Ensures patient meets admit requirements before patient goes for surgery: Provides verbal instructions to family or responsible party during pre-operative period about the whole surgical experience. Documents that assessments, interventions and patient outcomes are performed according to policy and procedure and Hospital standards. Restocks supplies/equipment in area to maintain adequate levels for patient care. Medications are checked for expiration dates. Supplies/medications are rotated so that outdates are at a minimum. Demonstrates continued competence in assessing, treating, and caring for individuals based upon age-specific needs utilizing a developmental perspective. Demonstrates appropriate knowledge and competence of designated skills identified for position. Performs appropriate nursing duties during procedures that pertain to pain management using current nursing standards as well as Hospital standards. Completes all documentation in Cerner to ensure the availability of accurate and up to date information in accordance with established standards. Adheres to established Hospital safety requirements and procedures to ensure a safe working environment. Demonstrates the safe operation of equipment and machinery and follows procedures for reporting and correcting an unsafe situation. Demonstrates the importance of continuing education to the performance of Hospital responsibilities and growth in profession. Communicates patient information to assure confidentiality and continuity of care. Interacts with all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees in a mature, responsible manner to ensure a positive and professional Hospital environment. Required Skills Licensure and Certification: BCLS, if not current, certification within 90 days of hire.   PALS and ACLS required, if not current, training within 6 months of hire.  Requires current licensure from the Board of Nurse License for the state of Oklahoma. Environmental and physical requirements - The employee works in a temperature controlled environment.  Candidate must be able to read and speak English fluently, have cognitive skills for math, reading, computer skills, and communication skills to deal well with the public (customers) as well as peers.  Vision for near, mid-range, and far accommodation. Hearing for low, medium and high pitch.  Position exerts up to 50lb of force occasionally, and/or 20lb. of force frequently and/or up to 10lb. of force consistently to move objects. Requires pushing, pulling, reaching, kneeling, stooping, and finger dexterity. Job risk include exposure to computer typing activities, potential for exposure to blood and body fluids (high), and exposure to infectious disease.  Required Experience Experience required: Minimum of one year experience in an outpatient setting preferred.
