Job Description

Functioning within the Health System’s mission, values, objectives, policies and procedures, and under the direction of the Registered Nurse, the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) receives patients graciously and efficiently and assists staff as needed. Performs clerical and/or clinical duties related to day-to-day operations of the office. Serves as a liaison between patient office staff and providers.  Must have good communication skills and interact well with patients, visitors, and  associates.  Performs other clerical and clinical work as necessary for the operation of the department.   Education: High School diploma or equivalent (e.g. GED) and completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program are required.     Licensure/Certification:  Certification as a Medical Assistant by an approved national examination agency required. Current BLS required.   Experience:  One to three years’ experience in health care specific to physician office practice required.  Previous experience with Prior Authorization process preferred.   Skills:  Must have knowledge of business office procedures, strong writing skills, and possess ability to accurately input patient information into the hospital information system (HIS).  Must also demonstrate skill in operating a computer, word processing programs, and other office machines.  Strong communication skills including the ability to greet patients, answer the telephone in a pleasant and helpful manner, and the ability to speak clearly and concisely, are also required.  The CMA must effectively establish and maintain working relationships with patients, associates, physicians, and the public.  S/he must have the ability to read, understand, and follow oral and written instructions; and demonstrate accuracy with basic office skills including filing by alphabetic or numeric systems, maintaining records, and recording test results. Technical skill requirements include knowledge of medical practice with the demonstrated ability to assist in giving patient care including examination, diagnostic, and treatment room procedures.  The CMA must also have the ability to take vital signs and have knowledge of medical equipment and instruments used to administer patient care.  Basic knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment and the ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situation are also required.
