WORCESTER - The Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) awarded its annual Cheers Award to UMass Memorial Medical Center in recognition of the medical center's work to prevent medication errors and promote patient safety.
The Cheers Awards honors individuals, organizations and companies that have set a superlative standard of excellence for others to follow in the prevention of medication errors and adverse drug events. The ISMP Medication Safety Alert! Subscriber Award was presented to UMass Memorial December 9, 2008 at the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists meeting in Orlando, FL.
"We are thrilled with this honor. Patient safety is at the heart of everything we do in medication management," said Walter Ettinger, MD, president of UMass Memorial.
According to the ISMP press release about the 11th annual awards, UMass Memorial is being honored because of sustained, long-term initiatives to integrate recommendations and actions from the ISMP Medication Safety Alert! TM newsletter into the work of internal patient safety committees and medication safety programs.
"By following the expert opinions and recommendations provided by ISMP, we can learn from other hospitals and make changes to our medication practices so that we are continuously improving patient safety here," said Roy Guharoy, PharmD, chief pharmacy officer, UMass Memorial.
Among those steps are monitoring and alert programs, staff education and regular presentations to multidisciplinary teams and departments across the health center, including senior leadership, nursing, physicians, biomedical engineering, materials management, respiratory care and pharmacy.
The Pharmacy Department at UMass Memorial was recently recognized as the best health care system pharmacy by the Massachusetts Society of Health System Pharmacists. UMass Memorial and UMass Medical School offer one of two post-graduate residency programs in the country dedicated to medication safety. The program is accredited by the American Society of Health System Pharmacists. The pharmacy residency program is the largest in New England.
The Institute for Safe Medication Practices is a nonprofit organization that works with healthcare practitioners and institutions, regulatory agencies, consumers and professional organizations to provide education about medication errors and their prevention.
