The Trauma Advanced Practice Provider (Trauma APP) is part of the Trauma Team at Mercy Hospital, providing care for injured patients throughout their hospitalization. This includes assessment, evaluation, treatment, and appropriate referrals. The Trauma APP will work collaboratively with the rest of the Trauma Team to ensure consistent, high-quality care and enable admission and management of the majority of injured patients to the Trauma Service.

Performs and documents a complete health history, based on age and history, and systematically records findings.
Performs a complete physical exam, when appropriate, and develops a differential diagnosis list; records in a systematic manner.
Assesses patient/family psychosocial/mental health needs, in consideration of physician and age-specific needs.
Requests and interprets necessary laboratory and radiographic data for patient treatment management and progress evaluation.
Analyzes information gathered, identifies problems and sets priorities.
Identifies the effect of health status on family members.
Utilizes appropriate communication/interpersonal skills in dealing with families and health team members, presenting positive professional representation of family centered care.
Proficient in a variety of EMR applications.
Formulates the appropriate differential diagnoses based on the history, physical exam and clinical findings.
Conduct hospital rounds on identified patients.
Assesses patients/family expectations about treatment outcomes, explains their role in planning care.
Write orders and progress notes.
Order appropriate laboratory and radiographic test.
Evaluate patients clinical condition, formulate and implement therapeutic plans of care.
Facilitates communication between physician, patient, family, and all health team members to ensure a unified approach to the plan of care.
Coordinate discharge of patients with appropriate disposition, follow-up, adjunctive therapy management and education.
Complete discharge summaries.
Identifies learning needs, in collaboration with the leadership team. They are validated and prioritized based on evidence and standard of care changes, competency needs, assessment of quality activities, safety and risk management data, and patient population goals.
Develops, coordinates, and/or presents educational programs related to area of expertise to meet learners needs.
Integrates current practice, new research findings and technological advances into educational programming.
Mentors staff resulting in employee development along a continuum of novice to expert.
Mentors students and/or residents in specialty area to advance a culture and commitment to learning.
Helps to create a learning environment that fosters self-learning, reflective practice, critical thinking, as well as technical and interpersonal skill development.
Provides direct education and/or educational resources to patients/families as needed.
Ensures evidence and standards based patient education is available for specific patient populations.

Education

Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant

For NPs: Current Minnesota licensure as a Nurse Practitioner.

For PAs: Graduation from an Accreditation Review Committee on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) approved program.

Qualification/Skills

Experience

3+ years clinical experience in surgery/trauma
Consideration will be given to lesser experienced applicants and new grads if prior knowledge of trauma care is demonstrated.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Advanced physical and psychosocial health assessment skills. Sound knowledge of trauma. Ability to assess data reflective of the patients status, interpret appropriate information needed to identify patients needs; and initiate and modify patients plan of care. Strong communication skills and ability to problem-solve. Ability to coach, mentor, and work effectively with nursing, medical and other hospital staff. Ability to educate patients and families as to the nature of the disease and to provide instruction on proper care and treatment. Evaluate, screen, and counsel patients on health maintenance and promote utilization of system and community resources.
Education and Certification Expectations
Successful completion of Allinas credentialing process
Completion of ATLS within 6 months of hire and maintain certification
Maintenance of 12 CME/CEU of trauma-related education annually

Licensure/Experience
Formal education as an NP or PA in an area consistent with the patient population served
Current License for the State of Minnesota
Certification by appropriate professional organization

Allina Health does not hire new grads from all academic institutions. Many proprietary on-line schools do not meet Allina Healths standards due to the minimal oversight of the students clinical experience, the high faculty/student ratio, and the lack of focus on national certification standards in the curriculum.

Work Schedule

Casual position to assist in providing coverage for our trauma team.

As a team of NP's, we provide coverage from 7am to 11 pm, 7 days a week which includes some call-time from home in the evenings.

Occasional weekend and holiday coverage may be necessary.

The city of Coon Rapids is a fast growing community on the Mississippi River just 20 minutes north of Minneapolis-St. Paul, and the metropolitan area gateway to the northern part of the state. Coon Rapids offers excellent access to highways, dynamic community shopping centers with major retail anchors, and a wide variety of recreational activities including neighborhood and regional parks, a municipal golf course, indoor ice arenas, hiking and biking trails and swimming pools.
