Position Summary:

Perform routine waived and moderate complexity tests in a clinical research unit laboratory. Tasks include specimen receipt and preparation for analysis; assist with workflow coordination; perform routine clerical and technical processes to support study specific protocols; adhere to defined quality control and quality assurance practices; serve as a liaison to internal and external customers.

Primary Responsibilities:
Perform a variety of routine and specialized laboratory procedures
a - Receive and process samples as required by laboratory procedures and study protocols.
b - Perform clinical laboratory testing as defined by DEPRU laboratory procedures.
c - Report test results to PI or study coordinator as defined by process.
d- Understand and comply with laboratory quality control and quality assurance policies and procedures for instrumentation and testing.
e - Utilize various hospital and DEPRU related information systems and software. Assist with coordination of technical activities pertaining to the needs of the unit.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:
a Maintain detailed records of tests performed and report laboratory test results to appropriate personnel; recognize Quality Control shifts and trends and take appropriate action whenever necessary.
b - Assist in the validation of new laboratory procedures and techniques.
c- Follow laboratory quality management program to include requirements of national laboratory regulatory agencies.
d- Review laboratory section of study protocol to determine sample volumes and order of draw for study start up team.
e- Keep all training up to date to include lab protocols and Duke Safety requirements.
f- Participate in sample collection as needed.
g - Process and ship study samples per study specific protocol instructions.
h- Participate in sample collection as needed.

Preferred Experience
Minimum of 1 year in a general clinical laboratory highly preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Experience involving patient contact, customer service in a medical setting. Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
Basic knowledge of medical terminology
Working knowledge of laboratory and hospital/institution computer systems is helpful
Basic knowledge of laboratory safety and infection control procedures and practices including standard precautions and hazardous chemical handling.
Ability to demonstrate required dexterity, knowledge, and ability to complete assigned laboratory tasks and skills, attention to detail and compliance with all appropriate regulatory and safety requirements.
Ability to maintain effective working relationships with all team members.

Minimum Qualifications


Work requires completion of a program for Clinical Lab Assistants or Medical Lab Technicians. Certification by a nationally recognized agency/board is also required.
