Job Description

As a member of the senior management team reporting to the President the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) is responsible for the provision of high-quality and cost-effective patient care with other members of the senior management team. The CNO leads the organizational vision and plan for ensuring quality and safe patient- and family-centered care. The CNO is accountable for ensuring there are adequate resources of competent nurses to meet patient care needs and for establishing a highly functioning professional practice environment for nurses and other members of the health care team. The CNO develops effective working relationships with the nursing staff, medical staff, organizational leaders and other members of the health care team and support departments. As a member of the senior management team, the CNO represents the organization as a community leader in both assessing and responding to community needs.

The Chief Nursing Officer provides leadership by setting and maintaining standards for the clinical and ethical practice of nursing, and ensuring the fulfillment of the organizational goals and objectives of nursing services. The CNO participates in assessing the environment, forecasting trends, transmitting values, communicating ideas, developing and implementing policies, managing resources, initiating programs and systems, and leadership and management development of nursing services. The CNO is responsible for assuring a single standard of nursing care and practice environment for all nurses throughout the organization, including nurses practicing outside the traditional nursing service areas and reporting structure. While the primary area of responsibility is focused on the hospital environment, the CNO is also responsible for nursing practice throughout the health system as a leader, and a resource and consultant to ensure standards of patient care and nursing practice are upheld.
Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
Education: BSN required. Masters Degree in Nursing or related field required.
License/Certifications: Current RN license from the state of Maine required.
Experience: History of progressive and successful leadership positions.
Comprehensive knowledge of nursing practice and administration and health care policy and administration required.
Excellent leadership and management skills. Demonstrates high integrity. Holds self and other accountable to high ethical standards.
