The purpose of this position is to provide primary eye care services at Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital in Sitka and/or at Ethel Lund Medical Center in Juneau and field clinics to other SEARHC clinics as assigned. The clinical optometrist is on the associate medical staff and cares for infants, children, adolescents, adults and geriatric patients.
Provides eye care to patients at Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital and/or the Ethel Lund Medical Center and any assigned SEARHC field clinic. Evaluates the visual system, eye and adnexa to diagnose, treat and manage refractive and ocular conditions. Provides and/or refers for diagnostic testing, vision therapy and low vision services as applicable. Treats and/or refers ocular pathology appropriately based on experience and privileges. Co-manages patients with consulting ophthalmologists and/or referring providers. Provides urgent care/ER/inpatient eye consultations as requested. Prescribes spectacles, contact lenses and optical aids when indicated. Provides patient and community education. Ensures the quality and timeliness of services provided. Responsible for timely and appropriate medical recordkeeping.
Supervises the Eye Clinic. Ensures departmental compliance with regulatory agencies, Joint Commission and SEARHC policies and procedures.
Assists with on-the-job training of optometric assistants in the areas of glasses and contact lens ordering and dispensing. Apprentices optometric assistants seeking a Dispensing Optician license or Optometric Assistant certification. Precepts, mentors and monitors optometry students.
Conducts field eye clinics at assigned SEARHC field clinic locations as needs indicate and resources permit.
Other duties as assigned.
Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) with a current unrestricted Alaska license to practice Optometry.
Preferred: Completion of Optometric Residency or Fellowship in the American Academy of Optometry or a current Optometry Board Certification.
3 years of clinical optometrist experience.

Advanced eye care knowledge to perform clinical duties that meet the standards of care set by the American Optometric Association.
