Performs substantive editing and analysis of biomedical and scientific manuscripts written by physicians and scientists at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Florida, and Arizona. Works with other members of the editorial staff (editors, manager, administrative office manager, editorial assistants, copy editors/proofreaders) to ensure that manuscripts are prepared with accuracy, clarity, and consistency of expression. Uses independent judgment to determine that reporting of data is complete. Explains and negotiates editorial changes with physician- and scientist-authors. Edits medical textbooks written by Mayo Clinic physicians and scientists for publication by major commercial biomedical publishers. Develops and presents workshops (to Mayo staff) on scientific publication and publishing in peer-reviewed journals.
A minimum of a Ph.D. in science, English, literature with experience as a scientific/medical editor, or a Masters Degree in science, English, literature with at least five years of experience as a scientific/medical editor, or a Bachelors Degree in science, English, literature with at least ten years of experience as a scientific/medical editor is required.
Familiarity with research methodology, statistics, and evidence-based medicine concepts. Thorough understanding of the editorial process for medical and scientific journals and the peer-review process. Exceptional command of the English language; strong writing, oral communication, and listening skills, including ability to explain and negotiate editorial changes with physician- and scientist-authors. Familiarity with copyright law and ethical standards of publication in peer-reviewed journals. Ability to edit complex scientific and medical concepts into accurate, concise, consistent text. Ability to prioritize projects under high-pressure deadlines. High level of interpersonal skills, sound judgment, and discretion. Keen attention to detail. Ability to work independently. Strong working knowledge of editorial references, including the American Medical Association Manual of Style.
