Job Description


SUMMARY OF JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

The nurse practitioner (NP) works in collaboration with the orthopedic surgeon within the scope of practice guidelines agreed upon by the collaborating parties. Provide evaluation and treatment of new patients, follow-up patients and postoperative patients in the clinical setting.

EDUCATION:

High School Diploma/GED

Must have a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing (DNP)

Current license as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) in State of Louisiana

Current BSLS/ACLS certifications

Eligible for Prescriptive Authority in the state of Louisiana as outlined by the State Board Nursing

EXPERIENCE:

Experience in evaluating and treating patients in a Physician office setting.

Computer literacy

Previous experience working in certain specialty areas may be desirable

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

He/she is responsible for the following as a Nurse Practitioner in the MMG Orthopedic group:

Evaluation and treatment of new patients, follow-up patients, and postoperative patients in the clinical setting.

Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including but not limited to joint and bursa aspirations, closed reduction of fractures and dislocations, injections of joints, tendons, trigger points and bursa, as well as brace, cast and splint applications.

Evaluation and treatment of new orthopedic patients in the inpatient setting. Coordinate care in the inpatient setting with the appropriate parties.

Interpretation of plain films, CT scans, MRI scans.

Referring patients as appropriate.

Conduct hospital rounds, write orders, and take call for the orthopedic surgeon. Evaluate and clarify clinical conditions, formulate and implement a treatment or therapeutic plan for hospitalized patients, dictate discharge summaries, histories and physicals.

Order, prescribe, dispense, and administer medication, orthotics, braces and other orthopedic devices as may be allowed by state legislation.

Be available for orthopedic trauma call, to include weekend and holiday rotations, with other mid-level providers within the group.

Document detailed information in patient chart.

Must have computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of required job information.
Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally.
Must be proficient with Windows-style applications, various software packages specific to role and keyboard.
Strong interpersonal skills.
Working knowledge of Advanced Practice Provider policies and protocols at a department and campus/system level.
Other office work as needed
