A Registered Professional Nurse with overall responsibility for the day-to-day opeartaions of the Operating Room including but not limited to a full range of supervisory, patient flow, scheduling, staff/facility utilization, and equipment/supply availability responsibilities.
Assesses plans, develops, implements, evaluates and revises education programs to meet the clinical needs of staff or to comply with federal, state, regulatory or organizational policy. Serves as a planner for continuing education programs for nurses and other disciplines when indicated according to established guidelines.
Demonstrates professional leadership in nursing practice, concepts, principles and interventions.
Interviews, hires and oversees the orientation of new employees. Provides ongoing formal and informal feedback regarding the performance of staff members.
Assures all staff members are in compliance with regulatory standards; ie; licensure, orientation, ongoing education and annual competencies.
Initiates and promotes staff participation in annual department goal setting and performance improvement projects. Develops unit-based quality agenda using performance improvement methodologies in collaboration with department and hospital-wide quality leaders, assuring an environment of continuous quality improvement, and improved patient and operational outcomes.
Collaborates with Human Resources on personnel management and recruitment and retention strategies.
Develops indicators used to monitor the quality and appropriateness of care, and the evaluation of that care.
Responsible for identifying patient care problems and initiating appropriate problem resolution processes, assessing nursing unit needs, completing staff evaluations.
Updates department specific content for learning modules and unit specific policies and procedures in collaboration with the Surgical Services Clinical Educator and Director of the Operating Room.
Meets with employees to discuss practice changes and position expectations. Delegates necessary authority and responsibility to the staff to perform within established expectations.
Responsible in conjunction with Clinical Leader for all aspects of daily schedule including assignments, efficiency and throughput. Designs and implements staffing patterns responsive to a dynamic care setting with fluctuating volume.
Exemplifies a high standard of customer service.
Demonstrates proficiency in Computerized Nursing Informatics (information) Systems.
Serves on nursing committees, hospital committees or professional nursing organizations. Fosters good public relations for unit, department and hospital. Performs other work-related management duties and activities as assigned or requested.
Serves as clinical resource person and assists nursing personnel in assessing patient/family status to plan nursing care. Communicates with family members and health professionals regarding care of patients. Serves as patient advocate within guidelines found in the patient Bill of Rights.
Promotes open communication within the unit, department and with other units and departments. Plans unit staff meetings. Provides input and standards in formulating patient care policy and procedures. Works with medical staff to coordinate medical and nursing management of patient care. Utilizes and promotes Quality Improvement standards and practice.
Perform other work related duties as assigned or requested.
Current Registered Nurse license to practice professional nursing in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
Three to five years recent healthcare nursing experience.
Five to seven year progressively responsible Operating Room experience.
Must maintain BLS certification.
CNOR preferred (must obtain within 1 year employment)
Must demonstrate leadership abilities. Must possess good oral and written communication skills.
