Nurse Practitioner Inpatient Services

The goal of each Nurse Practitioner is to provide excellent clinical care with critical thinking to the patients of SHC-SPR while advancing care through research, teaching, and education. Accountable to the Chief of Staff or his designee, the Nurse Practitioner assists with development, implementation and evaluation of the program of specialized health care for patients admitted / treated on Surgical Unit, Inpatient Rehabilitation and OPD under all hospital defined service lines. The Nurse Practitioner promotes collaboration between the medical staff and professional nurses toward continuity of patient care and efficient use of resources. The Nurse Practitioner serves as a role model for professional nursing practice
The Nurse Practitioner is accountable for patient management while the physician team is in the operating room or otherwise unavailable. Integral to the success is the presence of the NP on the unit as needed. The NP will attend rounds and will round on the unit. During these rounds events from the previous 24 hours are reviewed. The NP provides direct care to patients on the Surgical Unit, Inpatient Rehab and OPD to enhance continuity of care. The NP will assure that all goals are met by evaluating and implementing an initial plan of care, addressing acute changes in the status of patient, and facilitate seamless transition between levels of care. Other responsibilities include:
Utilizing advanced nursing knowledge to identify, prevent or solve complex and/or recurring patient care problems.
Assume accountability for the admission process as needed within CMS guidelines following acceptance of patient by Attending.
The NP will ensure that medical records are up to date and complete as needed, including but not limited to the Admission history and physical, orders, daily progress notes and discharge summaries.
Order and interpret age appropriate and condition specific screening, laboratory test, and diagnostic procedures.
Prescribes/orders Scheduled II-VI medications in accordance to guidelines developed with the Supervision Physician.
Collaborates with unit staff and physicians to facilitate a comprehensive plan of care, coordinate resources and work with UR Liaison in determining level of care and estimated length of stay.
Serves as an educational resource for residents, students and staff regarding pediatric primary care issues.
Initiates education to parent/patient to prevent/solve complex or recurring patient care problems.
Collaborate with the health care team in identifying and overcoming cultural and developmental barriers in the provision of education to patients and families.
Masters degree or higher from an accredited school of nursing appropriate for certification as a Nurse Practitioner.
Licensure in the State of Massachusetts as an APN is required.
Basic Life Support certification and Pediatric Advanced Life Support required
2+ years Critical Care nursing or NP experience required
Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills, basic computer skills, and strong verbal and written communication skills.
Hours: Monday-Friday 9am-5:30pm with occasional weekends/holidays as needed.
