Director of Laboratory, Clinical Pathologist

This position will be the CLIA Laboratory Director for the Regional Lab and an outpatient Oncology laboratory; and is responsible for the technical operations, leadership, and direction of the Clinical Laboratory in accordance with federal regulations governing clinical laboratories and in support of NorDxs short and long term strategic plans. Opportunities for the CLIA Laboratory Director include involvement in all disciplines of clinical laboratory medicine, input towards new technology and instrumentation as well as bringing those programs to live operating status, ensures appropriate in-house test menu, integration of laboratory results into the electronic medical record, member of laboratory senior leadership team and development of the Clinical Pathology service for our laboratory system.The CLIA Lab Director will work alongside talented colleagues within MaineHealth and the Spectrum Pathology Group that provides Medical Directorship at our hospital laboratories and Anatomic services.
This working senior leadership position includes approximately 85% clinical work and 15% administrative responsibilities
An integral part of MaineHealth, NorDx is the largest regional laboratory in the state of Maine, providing a full range of laboratory services including anatomic pathology, microbiology, molecular diagnostics and HLA (transplant lab). We are a vital resource in the northeast regional healthcare community, providing comprehensive, dependable laboratory services to hospitals, networks, physician offices, post-acute, and long-term care providers, managed care organizations and employer groups throughout the region.
NorDxs full-service regional laboratory provides professional laboratory services to its network of 10 hospitals within Maine and New Hampshire, as well as to commercial outreach clients. NorDx has around 550 FTEs, produces 4.5M tests annually, manages laboratory operations of 3 full-service hospital labs and 8 hospital rapid response labs, operates 27 community patient collection centers and supports over 800 regional clients and 94 Long Term Care facilities.
Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
Education: M.D. or D.O. that is board certified / board eligible Clinical Pathologist
Experience: 1-2+ years Medical Director experience preferred
Licensure/Certification: BC/BE Clinical Pathologist; must meet Maine state licensing requirements
Experience working in a Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) certified medical laboratory is desired
Fulfills the responsibilities as listed in CLIA 88 (42 C.F.R. *493.1495), and the responsibilities that have been reapportioned by the Laboratory/Medical Director as detailed in CLIA 88 (42 CFR *493.1407). Additional responsibilities may be defined by applicable laws and regulations.
Responsible for the overall administration of the laboratories, assuring the employment and training of competent personnel that can perform test procedures, record, and report test results promptly, accurately and proficiently.
Oversees the technical and scientific oversight of the laboratories, assuring compliance with applicable federal and state regulations, quality assurance, and testing appropriateness.
Responsible for all aspects of test performance; to include the pre-analytic, analytic and post-analytic phases of testing. Assure the enrollment in an approved proficiency testing program, the appropriate execution, and evaluation of proficiency testing, and the establishment and maintenance of quality control and quality assurance programs.
Review laboratory quality control activities and implement corrections and improvements as necessary; implement and review the quality laboratory objectives and quality plan.
Select the appropriate methodology for clinical use, verify all procedures performed and the establishment performance characteristics, including the precision and accuracy of each method. Resolve technical problems and assure the taking of remedial actions when test systems deviate from the established laboratory performance specifications.
Assure the following of the appropriate enterprise and laboratory policies and procedures and the availability of an approved procedure manual to all personnel.
Identify the training needs and ensure that each individual performing tests receives regular in-service training appropriate for the type and complexity of the laboratory services performed. Evaluate the competency of all testing personnel to ensure that they maintain their competency to perform test procedures and report test results promptly, accurately and proficiently.
Assist laboratory clients to ensure clinical expectations the ordering of the appropriate tests and that the test results reports include pertinent information required for specific patient interpretation.
Seek out and evaluate new quality assurance concepts, and evaluate new technologies, methods, and equipment with respect to improved quality.
Take responsibility for seeking and achieving professional growth and continued education.
Interacts with potential and existing clients by phone and/or face-to-face meetings to improve customer satisfaction as part of the sales, account relation and business development processes.
Participates in development and implementation of operations budget to ensure compliance with organizational expenditure requirements
