Job Description


The Charge Nurse is a registered nurse that is supportive to the nursing staff, while also is assigned and manages a limited number of patients. Coordination of care is accomplished through collaboration with the staff to ensure the deliverance of excellent quality nursing care at night. The Charge Nurse shall implement the nursing process in an organized, systematic manner to include assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation as evidenced by documentation in Patient Care Record and patient evaluations of care. They are an educational resource and coach for the staff. The Charge Nurse is accountable to the Patient Care Manager.

Performance Expectations:

Demonstrates the knowledge and is available to assist staff with skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served; also demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age specific needs, and to provide the care needed.
Demonstrates thorough, concise and timely documentation, shift reports and verbal communication. Communicates pertinent patient information to all health care team members.
Maintains own clinical skills staying current in skills, ongoing competencies, equipment and certifications required in specific nursing area, including EKG rhythm identification, National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification, and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
Demonstrates ability to perform and teach technical skills required for each units population by rendering professional nursing care including administering medications, starting IVs, maintenance of Intravenous lines and foley catheters , venipuncture, administration of blood products, restraint application and monitoring, sterile dressing, vents and ICPs and performs both complex and routine treatments as ordered by physician.
Implements a systematic and comprehensive plan of care to provide individualized care, educates patient and family about diagnosis, treatments or prescribed medical regimen and medications in accordance with patient and family readiness and ability to learn.
Demonstrates critical thinking skills and uses professional judgement to respond promptly with intervention when clinical changes occur, and prevention of complications in patients in need of cardiac monitoring, stroke care, and medical-surgical care.
Demonstrate the technical aptitude for working and troubleshooting equipment used including but not limited to traction, wound vacuum systems, continuous passive motion machines, and telemetry monitoring devices.
Demonstrates the aptitude for safely positioning and assisting patients using a variety of devices such as but not limited to abduction pillows, splints, slings, braces, neck collars, walkers, crutches and immobilizers.
Responsible for assignments for admissions at night to nurses.
Communicates effectively with others in an appropriate and timely manner and adheres to and promotes the established values of the organization, i.e. customer service, safety, infection, control and compliance standards.
Consistently follows FGH policy, procedures, and standards of care in preforming nursing duties and embraces and practices We CARE philosophy in all aspects of.
Communicates any staffing changes during the shift promptly to the Nursing Supervisor and staffing coordinators.
Ensure complaints (patient, family, staff, MD, etc) are addressed promptly and communicated to the PCM and patient advocate.
Facilitates conflict resolution with staff.
Responds rapidly and effectively during emergency situations.
Demonstrates leadership through clinical practice and teaching of nursing staff

Education/Skills:

Graduate of a recognized non-online RN program required.

Work Experience:

Minimum of two years as a staff RN in an acute setting required, with six months being at Forrest General Hospital preferred.

Certification/Licensure:

Current RN license - Mississippi State Board of Nursing required, BLS, Basic Coronary Care class, and EKG Interpretation class within three months of employment.

Ability to perform as a team member cooperates with others, follow directions precisely, delegate effectively, demonstrate initiative, and function under stress. Must be able to prioritize and perform multiple tasks quickly and efficiently.
