Job Description


The Department of Pharmacology, in the University of Virginia School of Medicine, is seeking a Laboratory and Research Technician I to assist investigators with in vitro and cell-based methodologies targeting the PTP4A3 protein tyrosine phosphatase. This position is within the laboratory of Dr. John S. Lazo. The individual will be expected to provide research support for ongoing research projects related to the development and refinement of lead small molecule candidates for colorectal, breast and ovarian cancer. RT-PCR, recombinant protein production, mammalian cell culture and/or sterile technique and/or additional molecular biology experience will be necessary.

A High School diploma or equivalent and at least 1 year of lab experience (which may include student experience) or a Bachelors degree in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology or a related discipline is required. Laboratory experience (0-2 years) in an academic or industrial laboratory setting is preferred. Familiarity with basic laboratory equipment (i.e., centrifuges, pH meters, pipettors) and the ability to perform calculations is expected. Experience with Microsoft Office (i.e., Word, Powerpoint, and Excel) is also required. Experience with GraphPad Prism is preferred.

Responsibilities will include:

Experimental Work [approximately 80%]:
1. Perform and help optimize experimental assays and assist with the interrogation and development of lead small molecule compounds.
2. Use sterile technique and perform EC50/IC50 determinations.
3. Purify proteins and conduct enzyme assays.
4. Perform Western blotting.
5. Perform cell culture.
6. Perform data analysis and visualization.
7. Present data at laboratory meetings.

Laboratory Maintenance & General Duties [approximately 15%]:

1. Maintain a clean laboratory area and assist with overall laboratory maintenance.
2. Make buffers and other reagents.
3. Maintain a laboratory notebook.
4. Be available to assist principal investigators as needed.

Ordering, Purchasing & Shipping [approximately 5%]:

1. Process purchases for the lab.
2. Interact with vendors to determine appropriate products.
3. Return damaged or incorrect items.
4. Ship items to contract research organizations.

Additional Duties as Assigned:

Position Compensation Range: $15.00 - $18.00 Hourly

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: High school diploma or equivalent plus one [1] year of experience is required. A Bachelors Degree in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology or a related discipline is preferred.

Laboratory experience (0-2 years) in an academic or industrial laboratory setting is preferred. PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
