Job Description


Progressive and rapidly growing OB dept.  RN with previous OB and/or Med/Surg experience preferred. Must have strong critical thinking skills and able and willing to work as part of a team. On call requirements. Must be willing to work 12 hour shifts with shift rotation with other staff members. Provides direct patient care in the Labor / Delivery /Postpartum / Newborn and Antepartum setting. Provides assessment and planning for individualized patient care. Communicates with physicians about changes in patient’s clinical condition including, but not limited to: fetal monitoring and results of diagnostic studies. Responds quickly and accurately to changes
 in condition or response to treatment. ACLS, PALS, BLS and NRP required but will provide if needed.  Must be able to work independently.

 

Summary:  Provides direct patient care in the Labor / Delivery / Postpartum / Newborn and Antepartum setting.  Provides assessment and planning for individualized patient care.  Communicates with physicians about changes in patient’s clinical condition including, but not limited to: fetal monitoring and results of diagnostic studies.  Responds quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment.  Performs general nursing duties in all Maternal Child Health departments.  Participates in performance improvement activities.

 Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • General:

    • Knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on age of patient and their clinical condition.

    • Ability to formulate and individualize plan of care, revise plan as indicated by the patient’s response to treatment and evaluate overall plan each shift for effectiveness.

    • Communicate appropriately and clearly to nurse manager, charge nurse, co-workers and physicians.

    • Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.

    • Interacts professionally with patient/family and involved patient/family in the formation of the plan of care.

    • Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.

    • Communicates effectively in English

    • Demonstrates values and behaviors according to Values Statement

  • Specific:

    • Ability to assess neonate at delivery and perform neonatal resuscitation.

    • Ability to perform a head to toe assessment on infants and adults as per policy.

    • Demonstrates knowledge of fetal monitoring. Identifies FHR patterns and treats appropriately.

    • Consults other departments as appropriate to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient’s needs.

    • Ability to assess presenting part through sterile vaginal exam.

    • Demonstrates an ability to assist physicians with procedures in Labor and Delivery, Postpartum and Newborn Nursery.

    • Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity.

    • Documentation meets current standards and policies.

    • Participates in performance improvement activities.

    • Completes annual educational requirements.

    • Maintains basic computer knowledge.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • General:

    • Knowledge of general nursing theory and practice

    • Basic knowledge and skills required for department computer system

  • Specific:

    • Demonstrates knowledge of fetal heart monitoring

    • Able to set up delivery room for delivery

    • Assist physicians in emergency situations which may arise with either a mother or infant.
