Job Description

The Hospital Medicine Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant works collaboratively with the Hospitalist consultant to deliver medical care to hospitalized patients. The focus of the job includes providing acute hospital care to complex medical patients.

This position is a SEMN regional position with primary work site in Redwing. SEMN Sites include I-90 Corridor (Austin-Albert Lea), River Corridor (Red Wing, Cannon Falls, Lake City) and I-35 Corridor (Owatonna). Currently NPPAs practice in our Red Wing site and Austin NPPA implementation is on-going.

Additional responsibilities include consulting on orthopedic, general surgery, and occasionally OB/GYN patients requiring pre-operative evaluation and/or management of medical comorbidities. A high level of autonomy is expected. The NP or PA provides comprehensive assessment, ordering, conducting and interpreting diagnostic tests, diagnosis, prescription of pharmacologic agents and treatments and non-pharmacologic therapies. The NP or PA will work with the interdisciplinary care team in coordinating discharge planning and facilitate the patient's transfer of care back to the primary provider. The NP or PA will consult and make referrals to physicians and other members of the health care team as appropriate.

The average hospital census in Red Wing is 10 to 15 patients with one or two being ICU patients. The average number of daily admissions is 3 to 4 with a fair amount of variability. Approximately 1/3 of admissions occur at night.

During daytime hours (7AM to 7PM) the primary hospitalist will be in house with the expectation that major medical decision making will be discussed with the primary hospitalist in real time. During the night shift (7PM to 7AM) there is a physician on call to help with complex patients available by pager and cell phone. To help with emergent issues there is an ER physician available 24/7.

In collaboration with the hospitalist the NP or PA will also provide care for ICU patients. We have a four bed open ICU in Red Wing. The ICU is remotely monitored 24/7 by Enhanced Critical Care in Rochester. Additionally here will be a 2 to 3 month training period including rotation at some of the larger Mayo Clinic sites.


Masters prepared graduate of an accredited school of nursing and Nurse Practitioner program. Current Minnesota RN license (or eligible) and certification (or eligible to be certified) as a FNP, ANP, or ACNP
Or graduate of accredited Physician Assistant program with current PA certification by NCCPA and registration as a PA by the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice (or eligible).
Must be eligible for DEA registration and billing privileges.
One or two years of in the care of medical/ surgical inpatients or emergency medicine is preferred, but will consider new graduates .
Strong written and oral communication skills are required and must have demonstrated skill in working collaboratively with all members of the healthcare team.
