This position is in the Audiology Section of Surgical Specialty Care Service at the VA Central Iowa Health Care System. The audiologist conducts audiological assessment to determine a patient's need for amplification, predict effectiveness of amplification, determine need for and type of aural rehabilitation and counseling of the hearing-impaired veteran and their family.

The Audiologist Compensation & Pension (C&P) will assess the degree and nature of hearing loss. The incumbent will perform complex testing for very difficult cases. C&P Audiologist acts within the guidelines, quality indicators and exam processing timelines set forth by Disability and Medical Assessment (DMA), the C&P department and the Des Moines Health Care System (VACIHCS). This position works with the Veterans Disability Administration (VBA) reviewing claims and collaboratively on projects regarding the compensation and pension process at the Des Moines VA.
Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
Identify and evaluate individuals with disorders in the reception and perception of speech, language and other acoustic signals.
Adjust testing strategies to adverse conditions affecting the evaluation process.
Administer the full range of tests including the testing of cochlear and retro-cochlear pathology and cerumen management.
Evaluate the type and degree of hearing loss for patients who are normally unable to provide consistent and reliable reaction to diagnostics.
Responsible for successfully completing C&P examinations by generating C&P exam reports solely utilizing CAPRI, ROSE, or other C&P templates.
Function as an advocate for Veterans and direct them to indicated points of contact for filing claims and for clinical and follow-up care when needed.
Demonstrate the knowledge of the changes associated with aging and possess the ability to evaluate Veterans based upon physical psycho/social, cultural, safety and other age-related factors as noted in the competencies described in departmental and/or unit specific policies and procedures.
