Physician - Ophthalmologist

The Ophthalmologist will report to the Chief of Surgery Care at VA Central Iowa Health Care System in Des Moines, Iowa. This position will perform a wide array of invasive and non-invasive services as established in current delineation of privileges. Perform surgery and assist Ophthalmology residents with surgery. Responsible for seeing patients in consultation in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

Common duties of the position include, but are not limited to:
Provide care of the Veterans' medical needs by performing examination, surgical consultation, and develops treatment and follow-up plans.
The physician spends most of their time on the following: Ophthalmic Surgery; Attending on Surgical Service and; Caring for patients in the outpatient Surgical clinic.
Provide ongoing patient and family education throughout the course of treatment.
Expertise in invasive and non-invasive surgical services as established in their current delineation of privileges.
Responsible for completing patient encounters, notes, and correctly coding visits in accordance with coding guidelines. Documentation must be completed within VHA guidelines and By Laws.
Provider will participate in discharge planning and interdisciplinary patient care plan activities in relation to inpatients.
Maintain skills, proficiencies, and professional knowledge necessary to maintain licensure and to perform clinical scope of practice.
Patient care may be delivered via face-to-face, Telehealth, or phone consultation, as well as consultation via face-to-face encounters, MyHealthyVet (email via computerized patient record chart), and electronic-consults.
Required to attend staff meetings, serve on committees, teams, workgroups, and peer reviews as requested.
Work Schedule: Intermittent. Typical work hours will be determined based on clinic work-load to accommodate both medical and surgical needs. On call duties will be assigned as necessary and appropriate. On call expectations will follow NSO SIIT guidelines.
