Evaluates patients for mental, emotional or behavioral disorders. Diagnoses disorders, including nature and extent, and determines the appropriate course of treatment for the patient. Uses talk therapy to treat patient illness or distress; cannot prescribe medication. Identifies mental, emotional or behavioral issues and diagnoses disorders using information obtained from observations, interviews, records, questionnaires, clinical studies, surveys, controlled laboratory experiments and reference materials. Develops and implements individual, family or group treatment plans using a variety of psychotherapy methods, such as cognitive behavior therapy, stress reduction therapy or play therapy. Assesses clients' progress and interacts with clients to assist them in gaining insight, defining goals and planning actions to achieve personal, social, educational and vocational development and adjustment. Evaluates the effectiveness of counseling or treatments and the accuracy and completeness of diagnoses based on the principles and procedures of psychology and related disciplines; modifies treatment plans and diagnoses as necessary.
Current licensure, or eligible to be licensed, in the state of practice is required. Incumbent must possess Doctoral degree from an APA accredited program. Must have completed a 12 month APA approved pre-doctoral internship and one year of post-doctoral supervised clinical practice.
