Position Summary: Paramedic is responsible to provide pre-hospital emergency care. Performs activities and functions according to MN State Department of Health rules and regulations and Tri-County Hospital policy and procedure.
Supports the mission of the hospital through personal conduct including demonstrated concern for the people of all ages served and co-workers, contribution of ideas and suggestions, helpfulness and friendliness, regular attendance and punctuality and adherence to hospital rules, policies and general expectations.
Performs patient care on the scene and during transport to the hospital in a safe and effective manner to provide for the physical and psychological needs of patient/family.
Under general direction responds to the incident scene, sizes-up the situation on approach, begins patient contact and primary assessment survey. Vital signs, airway breathing, circulation, bleeding and life threatening chest injuries.
Utilizes established protocols to begin emergency medical care and verbalizes physician orders.
Performs secondary assessment of non-life threatening injury/event.
Initiates venipuncture and IV therapy per physician's standing or verbal orders.
Determines the need for ALS (Advance Life Support) procedures. Will take responsibility for ET intubation and any medications administered according to physician's standing orders, physician verbal orders, which are according to the American Heart Association ACLS guidelines.
The EMT then is designated as the driver for the return trip to the hospital of the patient's choice, or closest facility.
Observes, reports, documents subjective/objective data to maintain an accurate and timely run report.
Initiates and/or assists with Basic Cardiac Life Support or ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) in cardiopulmonary arrest (when indicated) and maintains annual CPR training.
Responds swiftly, but safely to the ambulance garage and to the incident scene.
Maintains a valid Minnesota driver’s license which meets TCH’s insurance carrier’s insurability requirements.
Maintains safe control of the vehicle and equipment at all times. Maintains scene security for rescue personnel and bystanders.
Complies with established policies and procedures for safety and infection control when giving emergency medical care to ensure the well-being of the patient and staff, i.e., cot side rails, safe medication administration, body substance isolation.
Utilizes ambulance checklist routinely. Reports problems, deficits or concerns to Ambulance Director in a timely manner to assist with safe provision and quality of care.Performs routine equipment/supply/vehicle checks at beginning of shift. Replaces/restocks used items and initiates requisition process as required.
Cleans ambulance inside and out per established procedure after each run, as needed.
The on duty Paramedic is in charge in the absence of the Manager and Coordinator. He/she will notify them of any problems or changes that take place during absences. If immediate attention is needed, the Director of Patient Care Services will be contacted.
Under the direction of ER RN or RN Supervisor, Paramedic performs assigned tasks in the ER such as triage, monitoring vitals, interpreting heart monitor strips, assisting with physical transfers, assisting the physician as directed, administering meds, intubation, initiating venipuncture and IV therapy and doing blood glucose monitoring.
Must be a nationally registered EMT-Paramedic or a minimum of state licensed as an EMT-Paramedic.
Current MN drivers license
Must have current ACLS/PALS and BLS certification according to American Heart Association guidelines
Desired: Basic Trauma Life Support, CPR Instructor (AHA standards), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support.
