The Patient Access Representitave is responsible for correct registration, insurance and benefit verification, financial requirements and functions related to patient intake.   Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:     Serves as primary patient contact for registration, a broad range of payer benefits verification and authorization. Integrates the functions of registration, benefits verification, payer authorization and payment arrangements. Assesses patient's financial needs, assists patient with insurance and financial questions, and if appropriate; advises on payment options and available Carilion and community assistance. Monitors work queues and reports to ensure all insurance, demographic, and eligibility information is obtained and entered accurately in accordance with established policy and procedure. Ensures patient signatures are obtained on all required documents. Sustains an understanding of ICD-9, ICD-10 and CPT coding principles in order to research, determine and provide medical necessity and authorization information to patients at the time of service. Serves as resource person for patient, physician, office staff, various facilities, service lines, and outside agencies utilizing effective communication, courtesy and professionalism in all interactions.   Minimum Qualifications Education: High school graduate or GED. Experience: Registration and/or previous insurance experience preferred. Licensure/Certification: None requierd. Other: Knowledge of medical terminology, basic keyboard and PC. Knowledge of office procedures and equipment. Strong organizational and professional communication skills necessary. Must be organized and self-motivated. Must have knowledge of software applications. Must obtain BLS certification within the first year of employment and maintain certification. PAS Medical Terminology course completion and certification required during the first year of employment. Functions as a team leader for a group of 6 to 8 employees in the linen processing, surgical pack room, cart make-up or linen delivery areas.  Provides general direction for team employees and works with Shift Manager or Operations Manager to help manage workflow. Performs basic clinical services relating to the care, cleanliness, safety, and comfort of patients.   The Clinical Associate job duties include, but are not limited to, the following:     Exhibits competent knowledge of EMR and assists with chart audits. Provides support for department/unit staff scheduling, including lunch assignments. May review medical record for outstanding orders and notifies nurse of stat orders and medication changes. Orders department/unit supplies and equipment and stocks/organizes supplies. Processes equipment between patients as needed (cleans unit based equipment and gathers supplies needed to operate equipment). Operates and maintains general office equipment. As competencies are appropriate, will manage admissions, transfers, and discharges. Coordinates patient flow into/out of area using department/unit specific software and Intranet. Schedules patient therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. Receives and screens incoming calls via telephone and patient call system. Routes calls to appropriate individuals and takes messages accurately. Clinical Associates in Clinical Transport may be assigned to transports patients independently monitoring the patientâs condition en route and during procedures. May monitor and interpret EKG rhythms. Utilizes transportation algorithm to determine appropriate follow-up for emergent and /or urgent patient needs. Monitors cleanliness of the waiting and break rooms and performs safety/environmental rounds.   Minimum Qualifications Education: High school graduate or equivalent.   Experience: Clerical, medical terminology, and healthcare experience preferred. Previous experience in direct patient care desirable.   Licensure, certification, and/or registration: Must have successfully completed NA course or successfully challenged NA course with Carilion. Successful completion of AHA BLS-HCP required. Successful completion of Monitor Tech courses through Carilion required if working in a monitored area.
