Area Highlights

Nestled in the Rocky Mountains, Cache Valley spans the border of Idaho and Utah. Surrounded by beautiful mountains, Preston, population 5145, is the county seat for Franklin County. Franklin County population is 12,786.  The mountains create great opportunities for wildlife, hunting, fishing, mountain biking, hiking, skiing, snowboarding, and a variety of majestic sunsets. Franklin County ranks 24th among Idaho counties in population and 37th in size. The federal government owns nearly 33 percent of the county. Visitors can follow the Pioneer Historic Byway through the county to catch the old western flavor of the region. Preston lies just 30 miles from Logan, Utah and Utah State University where cultural and entertainment events abound and 60 miles from Pocatello, Idaho and Idaho State University.  The area is rural with 665 square miles in the county and 19.3 persons per square mile.

Cache Valley enjoys an unemployment rate of 2.8% and is currently ranked 1st in the nation for unemployment with the unemployment rate at 6.5% nationally.  In 2010 Cache Valley was ranked #5 for Best Places for Businesses and Careers by Forbes.  The median household income in Franklin County is $47,598. That is slightly higher than Idaho State average. The area is growing rapidly. Population in Franklin County increased 12.9% in the last ten years. Agriculture is the major basic industry, with government, services, trade, and manufacturing providing the largest employment opportunities. There is a four lane highway to Logan, Utah making travel between the areas very easy.
