Pawhuska Hospital, Inc. is a Critical Access Hospital that operates in Pawhuska, Oklahoma. The hospital is managed through an agreement with Jane Phillips Memorial Medical Center, which is an entity of the St. John Health System. Hospital services include a fully staffed 24-hour emergency department, acute inpatient, swing-bed, physical and occupational therapies (inpatient and outpatient), radiology services including the recent installation of a Computerized Tomography (CT) Imaging Suite, and a full service clinical laboratory.
Pawhuska Hospital traces its history back to its first home on Lynn Avenue between 18th and 19th street. The original hospital was opened in 1923, as a municipal (city) hospital, and had only one small room which served as the office. The original staff included a superintendent of nurses and a very small staff of nurses. After World War II, the hospital began to experience large growth, and the number of patients that were seen at the facility increased.
The hospital became incorporated and leased from the city, and in the early 1960s, it was determined that the hospital building needed many repairs and that the required repairs and reconstruction would be quite costly. Property on 15th street was obtained, and the new facility was built. On July 1, 1965 at 9:00 am, 22 patients were transferred from the old hospital to the new one. In 1977, another addition was built onto the hospital to accommodate additional ancillary services.
In October 1998, the Pawhuska Hospital Board determined that the hospital should seek Critical Access Hospital designation, and that a subsidy be sought through the City of Pawhuska to help with the non-collectable accounts in which services were provided. Initially the Hospital was denied Critical Access status, as Osage County was federally designated as an urban area. After a lengthy campaign, including letters and calls from local citizens and community groups, as well as a trip to Washington D.C. to meet with legislators, Pawhuska Hospital was approved to apply for the status in December of 1999. In January of 2000, the Hospital formally applied and the Pawhuska City Council passed the current four dollar monthly water meter surcharge to financially assist the hospital.
Pawhuska Hospital currently employs 49 individuals, with a full-time equivalent of 41 employees. The annual payroll is over two million dollars, and net revenues generated are over four million dollars annually.
