South Mississippi State Hospital (SMSH) is a Joint Commission accredited hospital that is part of the Mississippi Department of Mental Health. It is one of four (4) state hospitals located throughout Mississippi. Patients are court-committed through the chancery court in the county where they live. SMSH is one of two 50-bed hospitals that treat adults who are mentally ill. The Crisis Intervention Center in Laurel is a 16-bed extension of SMSH that opened in September 2004 and now accepts voluntary admissions as well as those who are court committed. SMSH has two (2) part-time psychiatrists, and two nurse practitioners -- one family and the other psychiatric. There are 19 nurses and 33 techs, along with a compliment of psychologists, social workers, and recreation therapists. SMSH and CIC offer all state benefits with full-time positions.
