Provides technical support and patient care in endoscopic procedures under the direct supervision of the physician and the registered nurse. Job Responsibilities Assists physicians and nurses with performing specialized procedures such as esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), colonoscopy, bronchoscopy, and endoscopic retrograde cholangio-pancreatography (ERCP). Assistance may include: positioning the patient, providing assistance with patient 's comfort measures and support for alleviating pre-procedure anxiety, connecting electrocardiogram (EKG) leads inserting bite blocks, placing grounding pads for the provider to maintain visual clarity of mucosa, providing irrigation as needed, and advancing or holding the endoscope as directed by the physician using techniques to help maintain proper insufflation. Prepares the endoscopy suite according to the scheduled procedure and physician preferences including, but not limited to: scope set-up, labeling irrigation solutions, and having all the supplies readily available. Scope set-up includes ensuring the scope functions with adequate air insufflation and irrigation, along with adequate video quality. Processes tissue and bodily fluids specimens, including retrieving tissue specimens, separating into the corresponding lab containers, properly labeling the specimen, and delivering to the designated lab department. Selects and operates instruments, such as biopsy forceps, polypectomy snares, hemostatic clips, various cautery probes, and retrieval nets/baskets as directed by physician during procedures. Performs endoscope high level disinfection and processing. Maintains the gastrointestinal (GI) procedure area in a clean and safe condition. Ensures necessary equipment and supplies are available for procedures. Performs the duties required for proper use of the decontamination room. Assists with maintaining the inventory supplies. Operates the software to select the correct patient and procedure. Utilizes safe lifting techniques and appropriate assistive devices. Cares for neonatal patients in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and/or newborn nursery (NBN) setting, with consultation and general direct or indirect collaboration from a neonatologist. Responsible for the registration of all patients' accessing services with emphasis on patient access/satisfaction, insurance/demographic verification and accuracy, scheduling, assisting and escorting patients, and point of service collection, while maintaining confidentiality, professionalism and ethics. Job Responsibilities May visit patient rooms to gather needed insurance and financial information. Confirms eligibility and verifies insurance benefits. Ensures all necessary demographic and billing information is obtained for patients and entered in the computer system timely and accurately. May schedule appointment times using computerized scheduling programs. Explains financial responsibilities for services received, payment options, and collection procedures to patients and/or parties responsible for payment. Counsels patients regarding insurance benefits and recommends alternative sources of payment and/or financial assistance when appropriate. Accepts payments and co-pays. Communicates effectively with insurance companies, external agencies, patients, physicians, and team members. May communicate with referring facilities regarding patient transfers and in conjunction with nursing, coordinate hospital wide bed control functions to provide the optimum placement of patients. May perform bed control duties including reviewing unit census in coordination with Environmental Services Supervisor and House Supervisor to determine patient placement (includes "Do Not Announce" patients), monitoring assigned bed tab to place rooms within designated time frame, and maintaining bed control log with assignment and placement issues. Takes reservations from physicians and their office staff and maintains a log of scheduled and unscheduled patients requiring bed placement. May move patients to and from the department by escorting, using stretchers, and wheelchairs. Answers internal and external calls; takes requests for patient information, disperses the information with accountability to all regulatory entities and according to policies and procedures, and schedules outpatient appointments and tests accordingly.
